Biofuels from algae: challenges and potential - PMC
Algae can produce biomass very rapidly, with some species doubling in as few as 6 h, and many exhibiting two doublings per day [16,17]. All algae have the capacity to produce energy-rich oils, and a number of microalgal species have been found to naturally accumulate high oil levels in total dry biomass .
The biorefinery has helped Algenol exceed its milestone of 9,000 gallons of ethanol per acre per year at peak productivity, with an additional 1,100 gallons per acre per year of hydrocarbon fuels. Algenol expects to expand their operations to full commercial scale by the end of this year.
Algae Biofuel as an Alternative Energy Source - Treehugger

In February, ExxonMobil gave up its decade-long attempt to cultivate algae as a profitable and scalable feedstock for biofuel — a liquid alternative energy source needed to power aviation, ocean-going ships, and long-distance trucking, while also combating climate change.
Harnessing the power of algae: new, greener fuel cells move
A new design of algae-powered fuel cells that is five times more efficient than existing plant and algal models, as well as being potentially more cost-effective to produce and practical to use, has been developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge. This a big step forward in the search for alternative, greener fuels Paolo Bombelli
Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Energy Department Announces $15 Million to Advance Algae-based Biofuels and Bioproducts The Energy Department today announced up to $15 million for three projects aimed at reducing the production costs of algae-based biofuels and bioproducts through improvements in algal biomass yields.
Frontiers | Strategies to Produce Cost-Effective Third
Third-generation biofuel produced from microalgae is a viable solution to global energy insecurity and climate change. Despite an annual current global algal biomass production of 38 million litres, commercialization confronts significant economic challenges. However, cost minimization strategies, particularly for microalgae cultivation, have largely been excluded from recent studies ...
The world is experiencing an energy crisis and environmental issues due to the depletion of fossil fuels and the continuous increase in carbon dioxide concentrations. Microalgal biofuels are produced using sunlight, water, and simple salt minerals. Their high growth rate, photosynthesis, and carbon dioxide sequestration capacity make them one of the most important biorefinery platforms ...
Algae Oil: A Sustainable Renewable Fuel of Future - PMC
5.3. Algae Harvesting and Oil Extraction. Production of oil from algae is a straightforward process that consisted of growing the algae by providing necessary inputs for photosynthesis, harvesting, dewatering, and oil extraction. Energy in the form of photons is absorbed by the algae cells, which convert the inorganic compounds of CO 2 and ...
According to the work of Xu et al., 95% of oil from 1 kg C. vulgaris could be extracted employing with 0.24 MJ of electricity consumption and heat consumption of 0.76 MJ in the dry route compared to 0.5 MJ power is required for the cell disruption of 1 kg algae slurry for oil extraction in the wet phase .
